Theatre-Making

Here’s some info about my theatre-making!

  • I am a co-founder of The Showmen’s Theatre Company, which launched in late 2022. My family are from the Scottish section of Showpeople (travelling funfair community).

The Showmen’s Theatre Company is a Showmen’s artist collective bringing theatre and workshops made by Showmen about Showmen for Showmen.

In our first year we’ve created social media content for various charities and have also collaborated with The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, bringing them an All The Fun of The Fair event and a short production Big Wheel to students and staff as part of their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiative.

Together with Yana Harris and Bailey Newsome, we are working towards lots of exciting new projects throughout 2024.

Keep your eyes peeled on our socials @showmenstheatre and on our new website - www.www.showmenstheatre.co.uk.co.uk

Any and all support is much appreciated!

  • The Four Marys was the first piece of theatre that I made as a solo artist. This piece was created throughout lockdown 2021 and was showcased digitally as part of Framework Festival for emerging artists.

    Read more about it here!

  • There is an exciting focus on theatre-making at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the BA Acting course. Throughout my time there I have been able to hone my skills as a deviser and maker, having created numerous pieces of theatre in various groups and settings.

  • I first developed theatre-making skills in my time at National Youth Theatre, Scottish Youth Theatre, Physical Theatre Ensemble Training, Clowning and many other short courses and workshops that I sought out pre-drama school.

Writing

Here’s some info about some of the scripts I’m working on!

  • Cow & Pig was recently featured on the 2023 Longlist for The Women’s Prize for Playwriting.

Cow & Pig was first developed with the Traverse Theatre as part of their First Stages Festival in 2022.

Pig snorts when she laughs and Cow is a cow for pointing it out. In art school they were inseparable. Now graduates, they must try and navigate a world of existential dread and the meaning of art. Where the language of their friendship is brutality and ridicule. Where commercial art is valued more than the avant-garde. And where James McAvoy is a mythical creature. The question is - where can they go from here? In this ridiculous, absurdist play - with plenty of LIVE art on stage - can Cow and Pig find the success they want whilst holding onto their integrity?

  • As mentioned above, The Four Marys was my first semi-long-form piece. Since it was created during lockdown, it was gloriously digital - I am still thinking of ways to adapt the script into a live staged theatre show… if anyone has any ideas let me know!

The Four Marys is a character led comedy production that follows Mary Queen of Scots’ (MQS’) four ladies in waiting—who, as the name suggests, are all called Mary—as they fight to be her favourite. The audience meet the characters when they are about eighteen, having just arrived back in Scotland after living in France from when they were infants. A combination of live monologues, interspersed with pre-recorded scenes is used to explore the characters.
They’re all ridiculous, the girls are fighting to be ‘the big boss’ favourite.

It’s 16th century Derry Girls… but make it Scottish.

  • Eggs? was long-listed for the Play a Pie a Pint David MacLennan Award in 2022.

It centres Granny Margie and her granddaughter Rhea as they drive round the Camperdown McDonalds Drive Thru in Dundee one too many times. It’s comedy, it’s intergenerational and it’s all things womens health.

  • Stupid Witch is a new script I’m exploring with classmate and fellow writer, Jack Young.

We came up with the idea whilst working on our second year Shakespeare plays - the Macbeth witches have enough lore around them but what about their great - great - great - great - granddaughters? What issues do they face as modern day witches?

  • Smantha is a Dundonian hairdresser, swept up by all kinds of absurdist madness.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Venus Goddess of Beauty and Bananarama. What more do you want?
